Jacobson breaks record in U. win

Nick Jacobson broke Keith Van Horn's career 3-point record Friday night during Utah's 73-57 victory over Cal State Northridge at the Huntsman Center. But it wasn't Jacobson's first-half 3-pointer that everyone was talking about afterward.

It was Jacobson's leadership and defense.
With his young teammates struggling against an aggressive Northridge defense in the second half, Jacobson decided to take over and put the team on his shoulders. The result was a 35-17 run over the final 14 minutes, including a 14-2 edge in the final four minutes.
"That's what seniors do," said Ute coach Rick Majerus. "No one has worked harder on his game than Nick. He's a lot like (Jeff) Hornacek. He's a helluva defender and a good team player. It's nice to see a guy who shoots threes who does that."
The Utes were in an unexpected battle against a team picked to finish in the middle of the Big West Conference, trailing 40-38 with less than 15 minutes to go in the game.
That's when Jacobson said enough.
He knocked down a 15-foot jumper to tie the score and then after neither team could score for more than two minutes, he sank a 3-pointer from the left angle to put the Utes ahead for good. The shot came about 10 seconds after he missed another three, but after Andrew Bogut knocked the ball out to him, he tried again immediately and sank it.
Then, after a free throw by Bogut, Jacobson knocked down consecutive jumpers on the left baseline to push the lead to 48-43 with 9:34 left, giving him nine of Utah's 10 points during the key stretch.
"I'm trying to establish my role a little bit more," said Jacobson.
"We haven't had a leader out there and the team needs it. I need to be more assertive in taking more shots. So I'm not going to hesitate."
The Matadors didn't fold, and cut the lead to two at 55-53 on a pair of foul shots by Davin White, whose 12 points led the team in scoring along with Thomas Shewmake.
That's when the Utah defense intensified, forcing turnovers and poor shots and the Utes went on a game-ending 18-4 run to turn make the close game look like a rout.
With the win, the Utes improved to 7-3, while Northridge fell to 2-4.
Jacobson led the way with a season-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while Richard Chaney added 18 and Andrew Bogut had his fifth double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Coming off their 65-51 loss at LSU three nights earlier, the Utes looked sluggish in the first half. They took the lead on a three-point play by Chaney with 10:07 left and led by six before settling for a 30-26 halftime edge. Chaney bounced back from a sub-par performance at LSU and scored 10 first-half points to go with his four rebounds.
Jacobson finally broke Keith Van Horn's career 3-point record of 206 after having a chance to do it in the previous two games. He only needed one trey and after missing one in the first minute of the game, he sank one from the left side with 7:11 left in the first half.
"Keith Van Horn is maybe the best player to ever play here, so to take the record from him is something I'll always remember," said Jacobson.
"It's amazing he's got the record because he's so unselfish," said Majerus. "I have to tell him to take your shot — 'you're a good shooter.'"
